CHAPTER TEN

BIG TONE

Tone shook his head as he watched his daughters face flash across the television screen. Luscious had gotten herself into a world of trouble and he feared this was something daddy couldn’t fix. Although his daughter hadn’t spoken a physical word to him in years, her actions let her presence in his life be known. No matter what had come of their relationship, he would protect his daughter if need be.

It seemed Luscious had her hands in more than the family business. They were saying she was a madam as well as a drug dealer. His first born child reminded him a lot of himself at times. She was stubborn, relentless, and unyielding when she set her sights on something she wanted. Tone liked to think the influence he had early on in her life instilled those qualities in her.

For the first four years of Luscious’ life, Tone had been there every day. When she woke up in the morning and when she went to sleep at night. He read her bedtime stories at night, her favorites always being the ones that featured and evil queen or wicked stepmother. Even at the age of four she would remark on the characters and their actions.

“Why are princesses so dumb, daddy?”

Tone laughed at his young daughter’s innocent observation. “They’re not dumb, baby girl, they’re what people call naïve, they just don’t know any better.”

“Sounds the same to me, I don’t want to be a princess if they act like that.”

“So, if you aren’t going to be a princess anymore, what are you going to be?” Tone smiled at his little daughter’s intellectual conversation.

“I would rather be the wicked Queen, she’s a lot smarter than the princess and in real life she would win.”

If he had known then that his little girl meant those words from the bottom of her heart, he would’ve tried to correct her, and told her she could be a teacher or a doctor. Instead, he had just kissed her goodnight and left her to her sweet dreams. He wondered if any of those dreams could be considered sweet now.

He loved his daughter and her mother, but he knew the life he was living would only bring destruction to those he truly loved. He never wanted to see Lovely or Luscious used as pawns to destroy him or put them in harm’s way. He truly loved them and he didn’t he think he could live with himself if something ever happened to them on his account. He lived a dangerous life, and a man’s family was the first thing an enemy chose to attack.

If he and Lovely were meant to be, it would happen; no forcing on either party’s behalf. But as of now, they were content with the relationship they shared. At least that’s what Tone believed. Because Lovely never complained, spoke up when she felt hurt or slighted, and never once asked the man she loved for more than he was willing to give, he assumed it was kosher, but it wasn’t.
